University of Arkansas Weather Station
Supports Judd Hill Foundation Research

The University of Arkansas Division of Agriculture weather station was installed at Judd Hill in 2005 to support cotton research that was initiated on the Judd Hill Foundation.  An accurate climatic record—particularly temperature and rainfall—is a basic requirement for conducting agricultural field research.  In addition to recording temperature and rainfall, this station is capable of providing more information, including relative humidity, wind speed and evapo-transpiration.  Producers use weather data from a nearby station to determine accumulation of heat units (growing degree days).  The accumulation of heat units are used to chronicle the development of certain crop stages and can assist with management decisions associated with crop maturity.

Future refinements include adding soil probes to the weather station to record soil temperature, which is an important aid in determining optimum planting date.  Based on accumulated data over the years, graphic output of current temperature and rainfall data can be compared to previous years’ data.  These comparisons will help producers to estimate yield and performance potential of current crops with respect to weather.

This year's trials included our commercial variety trials with 20 varieties. We will also had our variable rate pivot on display as well as research on plant bug thresholds. We also had a stop showcasing some conservation friendly technology--including surge valves for irrigation. All in all, it was a great even for everyone and thier families!
